"It is well acknowledged that teachers are the most important in-school factor contributing to student success, satisfaction and achievement, and that teacher wellbeing is deeply connected to the quality of their work." - The Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, 2014

Resilience is at the heart of teacher wellbeing, success and long term mental health, as they navigate their way through life's challenges, both inside and outside the workplace. With The Resilience Doughnut, you can build the resilience of your teachers and school staff so they can connect, grow and flourish within a positive school community.

Firstly, The Resilience Doughnut provides a practical research-validated tool for schools and colleges which can be used on a universal basis, enabling all staff to better manage the inevitable ups and downs of life. Secondly it can be used on a targeted basis to build the capacity for resilience of individuals experiencing a challenge, adversity, a period of transition. The Resilience Doughnut also provides a framework for schools and colleges to establish, build and strengthen a positive workplace climate, which involves every member of staff in their formal and informal interactions each day.

"Teacher wellbeing requires a cultural shift - it is not just about yoga sessions and fruit bowls." - Julian Stanley, Education Support Partnership

The Resilience Doughnut resonates with many adults, particularly those who have struggled through adversity and, not only survived, but have actually thrived as a result of their tough times. It also resonates because it focuses on the strengths in an adult lives, with more focus on what has worked and how, rather than the overbearing weight on the negative or problems that need to be fixed. It is essentially a strength approach and seeks to strengthen what is already working.

A resilience-informed response.

Resilience is not a latent quality inside an individual adult, or a quality of a family, school or community. It is instead a process that involves multiple systems working together to help us thrive when we are experiencing challenge, adversity or transitions. When building resilience we need an understanding of the things that help adults cope better, like relationships, a powerful identity, a sense of belonging, agency, meaning, purpose, achievement and social justice, all of which are embedded within The Resilience Doughnut. A resilience-building response involves multiple systems and is attuned to the cultural and contextual differences found among the individuals, the school and wider community to which they are part. - This is what we help you to do.

With research clearly demonstrating that adults who model emotional resilience have a significant impact on the resilience of the children and adolescents in their care, this is a perfect place for your school or college to start.
